Warehousing logistics is the use of self-built or leased warehouses, sites, storage, storage, handling, transportation and distribution of goods. From this concept, we can see that warehousing has the following five basic connotations:

Logistics activities

Warehousing is first and foremost a logistics activity, or logistics activity is the essential attribute of warehousing. Warehousing is not a production, not a transaction, but a logistics activity serving production and transaction. This shows that warehousing is only one of the logistics activities, logistics and other activities, warehousing should be integrated into the entire logistics system, should be linked with other logistics activities, and coordinate. This is quite different from the past "warehouse management".

Warehousing activities

Warehousing activities, or the basic functions of warehousing, include the entry and exit of goods, inventory, sorting, packaging, distribution and information processing, among which, the entry and exit of goods and warehouse management can be said to be the basic activities of warehousing, but also the basic functions of traditional warehousing, only the management means and management level. In the past, the sorting and packaging of goods were also existed, but they were more common, deeper and more elaborate, and even combined with the entry and exit of goods and the management of goods in warehouse, which constituted the basic function of modern warehousing. The reason why "distribution" was regarded as one of the basic functions of warehousing activities and warehousing was that Distribution is not the general sense of transportation, but the natural extension of warehouse, which is the memory requirement for warehouse to develop into distribution center. If there is no distribution, warehouse will still be an isolated warehouse. As for information processing, it has become a common phenomenon in modern economic activities, of course, it should also be one of the contents of warehousing activities. With information processing, it will not become a modern warehouse.

Warehousing purposes

The purpose of warehousing is to meet the demand of supply chain upstream and downstream. This is significantly different from the past in terms of depth and breadth of just meeting the needs of "customers". Customers are customers who entrust and demand them; customers may be upstream producers, downstream retailers, or internal enterprises, but warehousing should not only meet the needs of direct "customers", but also meet the needs of "indirect" customers, that is, customers; warehousing should be integrated into the upstream and downstream supply chain.  According to the overall demand of supply chain, the role and service function of warehousing are established.

Warehousing conditions

Warehousing conditions are specific physical or intangible places and modern technology. Saying "specific" is because the supply chain of each enterprise is specific, and the warehousing place is also specific; the tangible place of course refers to warehouses, warehouses or storage tanks, etc. Under the background of modern economy, warehousing can also be carried out in virtual space, but also needs the support of many modern technologies, leaving modern warehousing facilities. Equipment and information technology, there is no modern warehousing.

Warehousing methods and levels are reflected in effective planning, implementation and control. Planning, execution and control are the basic connotations of modern management. Scientific, reasonable and fine warehousing is of course inseparable from effective planning, execution and control.
